About Science on Saturdays:
Free Lecture Series for Middle and High School Students

Science on Saturday (SOS) is a series of science lectures for middle and high school students. Each topic highlights cutting-edge science occurring at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The talks are presented by leading LLNL science researchers supported by master high school science teachers. These presentations are offered in several locations. See the schedule below to find locations nearest to you.

Admission is free of charge. Seating is on a first come basis. Seats may not be reserved in advance. See the schedule for the starting times of each presentation, and a map to the venue. Seating is limited. Please come early to ensure that you will find a seat.

Students receive a "Student Notes" worksheet to record key information from the talk. The worksheet will be marked with the official SOS stamp at the end of the presentation. Many teachers use the worksheet to award "extra credit." Students should check with their teacher in advance to determine if they will receive credit for attending SOS.

Teachers who attend the SOS presentations can receive a CD with the presentation slides. If the talk is video recorded, they can receive a DVD of the recorded talk as well. These CDs and DVDs are offered free of charge and are sent by mail after the completion of the lecture series for the year. Be sure to register when you attend to receive your copy of these valuable teaching resources.

One of the most creative and dynamic shows of its kind, Outerbridge - Clockwork Mysteries is a high-energy magical adventure—a bizarre and fascinating journey through time that fuses revolutionary illusions with split-second artistry and holds viewers spellbound. With the help of an elaborate Victorian time machine, performers and spectators travel back in time to predict the contents of a time capsule. From the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, Ted and Marion Outerbridge create an experience that far exceeds the wildest expectations. “Such intense precision and speed that there is no other explanation… than the presence of magic.” / MORINVILLE NEWS

Pacific Chamber Symphony - A Celebration of PCS - Mozart, Schubert
Maestro Kohl performs and conducts Mozart's final purely instrumental work, the gorgeous Clarinet concerto in A Major. Taken by the genius of his clarinetist friend Anton Stadler Mozart wrote delicate interplay between soloist and orchestra. It was to be Mozart’s final purely instrumental work and one of the last to be completed. Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 pays homage to Mozart in character and style as he was infatuated with the composer at the time he composed it. In now his fourth work to be commissioned by PCS the celebrated composer Christopher Caliendo celebrates our 25th anniversary

Amjad Ali Khan is the world’s acknowledged master of the sarod, the small string instrument known for the resonant and nearly vocal qualities it brings to Indian classical music. A prolific composer of ragas, or traditional melodies, Khan’s exquisite music crosses cultural barriers, seamlessly blending Indian traditions with other musical influences. Winner of numerous international accolades, the sixth generation sarod virtuoso now performs worldwide with his sons Amaan and Ayaad, in a glorious opportunity to experience a living tradition. “Khan is one of India’s foremost ambassadors to the rest of the world. Famous for his elegant style and technique, he has breathed a new life into an ancient form.” / LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR

The Gibson Brothers
The hallmark of the Gibson Brothers’ music for over two decades has been their sublime harmonies—harmonies so tight it can be hard to tell where one brother’s voice ends and the other’s begins. With an uncanny ability to blend classic and modern, they capture both the high lonesome notes of Bill and Charlie Monroe and the pop/country sound of the Everly Brothers. The finest brother duet in bluegrass today, the Gibson Brothers offer fine acoustic music with an exhilarating energy and impeccable musicianship that captivates audiences of all ages. “The Gibson’s real strength lies in their stunning vocal harmonies… they sing gospel and honky-tonk with equal fervor.” / TIMES UNION

Poulenc Trio - Del Valle Fine Arts
Piano, oboe, and bassoon: it’s a stunningly beautiful combination, and the Poulenc Trio is the most active practitioner of the form. Mozart, Beethoven and Poulenc, as well as contemporary composers have written for this grouping, yet there are too few artists who can perform these works. The Poulenc Trio was formed in 2003 by pianist Irina Kaplan, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia and faculty member at the Peabody Institute; oboist Vladimir Lande, also a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory and principal oboist and principal guest conductor of the St. Petersburg Symphony; and bassoonist Bryan Young, who studied at the Peabody Conservatory and at Yale and is a winner of the Gillet International Bassoon Competition. This vibrant, versatile trio is committed to expanding the repertoire of wind trios through the discovery of old masterpieces and the creation of new works.
“…an intriguing and beautifully played program….the Poulenc Trio does its namesake proud.” The Washington Post
