The opening reception for “Come Home for the Holidays” exhibit will be held on Friday, November 7 at 5 p.m. at Pleasanton ’s Museum on Main , 603 Main Street . Open to the public. No fee. No reservations necessary.

Exhibit - November 7, 2008 to January 11, 2009

Pleasanton ’s Museum on Main has a new exhibit, “Come Home for the Holidays” that will run from November 7, 2008 to January 11, 2009 . The exhibit will showcase winter holiday traditions in Pleasanton and in Pleasanton ’s sister cities Tulancingo , Mexico , and Blairgowrie , Scotland .

The exhibit also brings holiday tradition up to date with artistic impressions of the season created by members of the Kids Love Art School of Fine Arts in Pleasanton .

Family gatherings and public celebrations, food, music, gifts, stories, and games have all become traditions in the celebration of Thanksgiving, Christmas, the New Year, and other special days.

Some of these holiday traditions cross national boundaries. Others are national or local in scope. Still others are practiced solely by the families who created them. All help to enrich the meaning of these special days for those who celebrate them.

Gingerbread House Contest

The gingerbread house contest is open to all ages, individuals and businesses. The display will run from November 7 through December 6, 2008 . Entries are welcome from November 7 through November 14. The size of the gingerbread house should not exceed 18" by 18" and it should be edible. No glue may be used. The five contest categories are public’s favorite, most elegant, funniest, most historic and most creative. Winners will be announced on December 6 at the museum at 3:30 p.m. The winner in each category will receive a certificate of recognition and gifts from the museum store. Proceeds benefit history scholarships for students.

Storytelling and Poetry Reading

Holiday programs at the museum include storytelling “A Child's Christmas in Pleasanton-1958" by Andy Jorgensen, civic arts manager, City of Pleasanton on December 11 at 5 p.m., and poetry reading on December 18 at 6 p.m.

Speeder Rides, Niles Canyon Railway
Railroad motor cars, also called "speeders", are the way that track crews used to travel. These days, most railroads don't use speeders. They have converted to "high-railers," or pickup trucks with flanged wheels at each end, to carry their work crews on the rails or the highways. Now, the Niles Canyon Railway presents an opportunity to ride the rails the way that track gangs used to travel. Speeder rides will be offered to the public for a unique railroad experience.
Advance sales only.  Rides are very limited.  Long pants and closed shoes are required.
