Pink Martini
Since 1994, Portland’s sensational “little orchestra” has been delighting audiences with their engaging take on multilingual pop, jazz and classical tunes. Called “utterly cosmopolitan yet utterly unpretentious” by The Washington Post, Pink Martini has staked out a unique place in the hearts of music fans with their appealing blend of old-school elegance and modern day humor.

Although he started piano lessons at age six, band leader Thomas Lauderdale was heading for a career in politics before music swept him in another direction. After attending too many political fundraisers with loud and lackluster music, he was inspired to start Pink Martini believing he could provide a more attractive and bipartisan soundtrack. A year later, he began to collaborate with Harvard classmate China Forbes and their hit song “Sympathique” became an overnight sensation in France. Nominated there for Song of the Year, it remains a mantra for striking French workers with its irresistible chorus “Je ne veux pas travailler” (“I don’t want to work.”)

More than 25 years, nine studio albums, several EP releases, numerous songs, and countless shows later, Pink Martini continues to be a sensation. A genuinely American band, they have the opportunity as Lauderdale says, “to represent a broader, more inclusive America … comprised of people of every country, every language, every religion” through their music. Featuring a dozen musicians with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini has performed on concert stages and with symphony orchestras around the world. They have toured and recorded with such guests as the four Von Trapp siblings, great-grandchildren of The Sound of Music family, Rufus Wainwright, and Portland-native NPR White House correspondent Ari Shapiro.

With their sizzling vocals, smooth instrumentals, and infectious rhythms, a Pink Martini concert is to be sipped, savored, and remembered long after it’s over.

John Mayall & Walter Trout

John Mayall & Walter Trout
For over 50 years John Mayall has served as a pioneer of blues music, rightfully earning him the title, “The Godfather of British Blues”. In 2013 John signed with Forty Below Records and has been experiencing a true artistic and career renaissance, including an induction into the Blues Hall of Fame and 2021 GRAMMY Hall of Fame induction (Blues Breakers album). Over the course of the last several decades, Walter Trout has been a prolific artist regularly releasing studio albums including his 2017 all-star release We’re All In This Together. A four-time BMA winner for Blues Rock Album of the Year, he continues to receive global accolades with no signs of slowing down.

JOHN MAYALL has an impressive musical career that spans over 50 years. The English blues singer, pianist, harmonica player, guitarist, and songwriter founded the band, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the 1960’s—a band whose members included many celebrated blues and blues rock guitarists, such as: Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, and many more. Attracted by the West Coast climate and culture, Mayall made a move from England to Los Angeles in 1969 and began forming bands with American musicians. Over the next three decades, Mayall became further revered for his many innovations in jazz, rock and blues and a succession of dynamic albums including the Grammy-nominated “Wake Up Call” featuring guest artists Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, Albert Collins and Mick Taylor. He has toured for decades with band members including Rocky Athas on guitar, Jay Davenport on drums and Greg Rzab on bass. Carolyn Wonderland became the first ever female lead guitarist in any of John’s bands and was a featured guitar player on John’s latest studio album “Nobody Told Me,” (2019) which also included Todd Rundgren, Steven Van Zandt, Joe Bonamassa, Larry McCray and Alex Lifeson on selected cuts.

WALTER TROUT has been nothing short of prolific over the course of a seven decade career that has spanned the globe, as one of the great purveyors of the blues and blues rock. Trout’s history is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by wilderness years, brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion, and the survival of an organ transplant. From 1973, when he left his New Jersey home headed to Los Angeles, he has followed a road that afforded him an opportunity to just play, sharing the stage as a sideman with Jesse Ed Davis, Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulson, Joe Tex and John Mayall. After leaving the Bluesbreakers, he embarked on a solo career that established a deep legacy as a revered singer-songwriter in the world of blues and Americana. Trout continues to deliver inspired recordings, performances, and a voice that articulates insights into the world that inspires his deep perspective. There’s no autopilot emanating from Walter Trout, but a true a sense of growing momentum, elements of surprise, and repertoire that continues to be more compelling with each new creation.

Nochebuena: Christmas in Mexico
The acclaimed Ballet Folklórico de Los Ángeles and Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar bring together an all-star cast of music and dance in a dazzling presentation of the traditions and customs celebrated by the people in Mexico during the Christmas season.

This spectacular show focuses on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), when Mexican families attend midnight Mass before returning home to a late-night feast. Foods like bacalao, ham, turkey, tamales, and mole, with ponche to drink and lots of music create a festive and spirited night of fun. In Mexico, the holiday means a full season of Christmas-related celebrations, representing a blend of indigenous culture, Spanish heritage, and other cultural influences.

Ballet Folklórico de Los Ángeles catapulted to international fame when they danced at the 90th Annual Academy Awards in celebration of the Pixar movie, Coco. They also performed at the D23 Expo, the Coco Premiere at the El Capitan Theater, and “Disney Night” on Dancing With The Stars, working alongside Natalia Lafourcade, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Miguel as they sang the award-winning “Remember Me” from the film. Founded in 2011 by Kareli Montoya, BFLA has worked on stage with Grammy Award winners Lila Downs, Pepe Aguilar, Mariachi Divas and Mariachi Camperos. This versatile group performs both traditional and modern regional dances in world-class venues including the Dolby Theatre, the Greek Theater, and the Ford Amphitheater with as many as forty-eight dancers.

Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar has captivated and delighted audiences at both intimate venues and major theaters throughout the United States, including the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, Bakersfield Fox Theatre, and the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. Founded in 1994 by Jaime Cuéllar, the ensemble of 8-12 mariachi musicians is now led by his son, Jimmy K. Cuéllar, a three-time Grammy award winner in his own right. The group frequently collaborates with other artists such as Pedro Fernandez, Ana Barbara and Angela Aguilar. In 2017 they teamed with Ballet Folklórico de Los Ángeles to recreate “Tale as Old as Time” from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which went viral with over 15 million views. Most recently, Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar were featured artists in Center Stage Opera’s 2019 production of Mozart’s Le Nozze de Figaro. Avid proponents of music education, the group teaches mariachi for all ages at their own Academy for Performing Arts.
