About Science on Saturdays:
Free Lecture Series for Middle and High School Students

Science on Saturday (SOS) is a series of science lectures for middle and high school students. Each topic highlights cutting-edge science occurring at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The talks are presented by leading LLNL science researchers supported by master high school science teachers. These presentations are offered in several locations.

Admission is free of charge. Seating is on a first come basis. Seats may not be reserved in advance. See the schedule for the starting times of each presentation, and a map to the venue. Seating is limited. Please come early to ensure that you will find a seat.

Students receive a "Student Notes" worksheet to record key information from the talk. The worksheet will be marked with the official SOS stamp at the end of the presentation. Many teachers use the worksheet to award "extra credit." Students should check with their teacher in advance to determine if they will receive credit for attending SOS.

Shale Gas Revolution - Roger Aines, LLNL, with DEan Reese, Tracy HS.
Presenter: Roger Aines, LLNL, Teacher: Dean Reese, Tracy HS.

The new abundance of natural gas provides energy options for America, including clean electric power. Oil production has increased, reducing the dependence of the US on imported petroleum. Both benefits come with the challenge of managing the environmental impact of new oil and gas development in the US. This talk will discuss the way shale gas and oil are created and produced, and the latest choices now available for generating energy in the United States.

February 14
Green Power: Making Electricy out of Thin Air
Presenter: Jeff Mirocha, LLNL, Teacher: Tom Shefler, Granada HS.

What are fossil fuels? What is the greenhouse effect? How are the two related? Can we reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and lower the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere? Wind and solar power can help lead the way. We will learn how state-of-the-art science and engineering can be used to utilize more clean, green energy from both the wind and the sun, right out of thin air.

Hydrology of an "Ant Farm"
Presenter: Andy Tompson, PhD-LLNL Teacher: Erin McKay, Tracy HS.

How does groundwater interact with surface water and surface ecosystems? How can the many types and forms of groundwater pollution be visualized? This presentation will show some of the real or potential impacts of drought and climate change and how groundwater may be better managed in the future. “It may look like an Ant Farm, but there are really no ants in this demonstration!”

New Orleans Bash at the Bothwell
This stellar Mardi Gras party returns complete with live music, a la carte Louisiana style cuisine, a Pirate's Corner bar, hurricanes, and over-the-top decor, making it one of the most decked-out and authentic Mardi Gras parties in the East Bay.

Details in every corner offer interesting things to explore, from the French Quarter-like Street Art to corners devoted to voodoo, Storyville, and more. The Bourbon Street-style souvenir shop allows revelers to purchase masks, beads, boas and trinkets - or even get face-painted by a pro- in order to deck themselves out, Mardi Gras style. And the popular mystique, Madame Alexander, returns for fortune telling done with her special style.

At 6pm, "Queen of Boogie Woogie" Wendy DeWitt kicks off the show in "Jackson Square", and Big Money in Gumbo will perform two small private concerts at 6pm and 7pm honoring Preservation Hall, a famous club in New Orleans' French Quarter that honors the birthplace of jazz, and is joined by The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol, one of the Bay Area's most riveting performers. Big Money in Gumbo is led by Mal Sharpe of KCSM-FM's Back to Basin Street fame and his "Man on the Street" comedy routine. Hailed by a reviewer as a "New Orleans-drenched jazz and R&B (band) that can cover everything from Louis Armstrong to Professor Longhair," these popular tribute shows sell out each year.

Following the Preservation Hall Experience, Big Money in Gumbo members head to "Jackson Square" for a lively full-blown street party, New Orleans-Style, with partygoeers that crowd the dance floor.

With over-the-top decor that echoes the atmosphere of the French Quarter, to the excess that is Mardi Gras, we offer a chance to step out in style or be Bourbon-Street casual for a night of live music and a great party. More than just another fundraiser, the Bash has become THE place to celebrate.

Cypress String Quartet - Del Valle Fine Arts
One of the leading lights of the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area arts scene, the Cypress Quartet has achieved renown throughout the United States and Europe. Formed in 1996, the name was chosen as an homage to Dvoˇrák’s Cypresses, twelve love songs for string quartet. The members of the quartet (Cecily Ward, violin; Tim Stone, violin; Ethan Filner, viola; Jennifer Kloetzel, cello) come from the cream of music schools (Juilliard, Guildhall School of Music, Royal College of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music). From the start, they have made a conscious effort to blend their diverse influences into a unique crystalline sound. After a residency at the Banff Centre and a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival, the quartet received intensive coaching in London from the Amadeus Quartet. The Cypress Quartet recently released its tenth recorded disc and has commissioned and premiered over 30 works.

The Intergalactic Nemesis
A retro radio show merges with comic book magic to create unforgettable one-of-a-kind live theater. In a unique multimedia experience, three actors voice dozens of characters, a Foley artist creates sound effects, and a pianist plays a cinematic score, while over 1,250 hand-drawn, full-color comic book images fill the stage, bringing a thrilling graphic novel adventure to life. Target Earth and its sequels have fascinated audiences and critics alike, bringing out everyone’s inner 12-year-old and leaving behind an aura of wonder that lasts for days.
