Tuesday

Lecture - Seabiscuit in Pleasanton
Author and illustrator Jani Buron will give a talk on the legendary race horse Seabiscuit and discuss her upcoming book, “The Spirit of Seabiscuit”

Seabiscuit was a thoroughbred racehorse who became an unlikely winner and champion in the Depression era. In the 1940s, Buron lived on Ridgewood Ranch near Willits, California, the home of Seabiscuit and his owner Charles Howard, a successful automobile manufacturer.

Buron’s father was the foreman in charge of thoroughbred horses. Through the Spring of 1950, the family lived in a house on the property that Howard built for them. The following September the Buron family moved to Pleasanton where Jani attended Amador Valley High School, graduating in 1954.

Buron has appeared in four Seabiscuit documentaries: the A&E production of "The True Story of Seabiscuit," the ESPN Classic SportCentury production of "Seabiscuit," the PBS documentary of the world movie premiere in Willits, California, and a 2002 KRON-TV production. She has been an onstage guest speaker at the Reno Hilton and a speaker at book clubs and writers groups. For three summer seasons at the Ridgewood Ranch, she was a story teller.

On display at the talk will be photos of Seabiscuit at Ridgewood Ranch, memorabilia from Buron’s life at the ranch and color portraits of the famous racehorse at Bay Meadows racetrack in 1938.

Pleasanton Heritage Festival - Art & Craft Festival.
Arts and Crafts Festival
From the MLA web site:
Over 200 artist displays will be lined up along historic tree-lined Main Street. This year festival attendees will find a variety of high quality hand-crafted work made and sold by the exhibiting artisan. Thirty percent of the art & craft displays will be fine art representative of a wide array of mediums from two-dimensional acrylic paintings to hand-made mixed media wall-hangings.
The theme of the festival will focus on the "days of yesteryear". Throughout you will be able to view vintage artifacts of the past, watch spinners in action, admire the intricate artwork created by the bobbin-lace ladies and be amazed at the end results produced by local woodcarvers.
While strolling along Main Street don't miss seeing the First Annual Pioneers of Pleasanton display sponsored by the Tri-Valley Herald. A fine collection of vintage photos and heirloom pieces from two of Pleasanton's founding families: the Appersons and the Spotornos.
At the south end of the festival, Abbie Street will be temporarily turned into Abbie Farm—a live display of farm animals presented by Abbie 4-H members. And across the way will be a working blacksmith shop. Stop by and purchase a personalized horseshoe as a momento of this year's Heritage Festival.
Sponsor: Pleasanton Downtown Association.
Location:  Main Street, Downtown Pleasanton
Times:  10:00am to 6:00pm both days
Admission: Free
