Marriage of Figaro - Livermore
Valley Opera The Marriage of Figaro is considered Mozart’s greatest social commentary. It is a combination of comedy and pathos. Figaro and Susanna joyfully await their coming wedding but it is clouded by the marital woes of their employers, the Count and Countess. The Count seems to have lost interest in Rosina (the same Count and Rosina from the Barber of Seville). He now covets Susanna, Rosina’s maid servant. The two women devise a plan with the help of Cherubino that will teach the Count a lesson he will never forget. Magnificent arias, duets, and ensembles abound that reflect deception, anger, discord, and finally, repentance, and reconciliation. Valley Concert Choral -
Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle This concert will feature Gioachino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. This "Little Solemn Mass" was written in 1863. He called it the "last of my sins of old age"; and it was described by Napolean III as neither little nor solemn! Rossini originally scored it for 12 voices, soloists, two pianos and a harmonium. The harmonium is a small instrument similar to an organ, but uses reeds that give it a sound similar to an accordian. The organist typically pumps foot pedals to operate the bellows. This work was originally performed in 1864, and an orchestral version was performed in 1869, three months after Rossini's death. Sponsor: Valley Concert Choral Location: Saturday: Trinity Lutheran Church, 1225 Hopyard Rd, Pleasanton. Sunday: First Presbyterian Church, 4th & L Streets, Livermore Times: Saturday: 8:00pm; Sunday: 3:00pm Admission: $18 in advance, $20 at the door. Students 18 and under free. Season tickets are $53. Museum on Main Lecture - A Nation
Transformed Gerald S. Henig will give a talk “A Nation Transformed: How the Civil War Changed America Forever” at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 19 at the Lynnewood United Methodist Church, 4444 Black Avenue, Pleasanton. The lecture is one of the Ed Kinney Lecture Series presented by Pleasanton’s Museum On Main. Often called America’s second revolution, the Civil War left a legacy of change unsurpassed by any other event in U.S. history. In many respects, a different nation emerged from the conflict than the one that entered it. Join Professor Gerald Henig as he discusses the vast and profound transformations spawned by the Civil War, including the new methods for raising, administering, and financing armies; fighting on land, sea, and from the air; gathering intelligence; providing health and medical care; dealing with war dissenters and enemies from within; caring for the maimed, widowed, and orphaned; honoring the dead, and a host of other unanticipated challenges. Copies of his new book about the Civil War will be available to purchase. Gerald S. Henig is emeritus professor of history at California State University, East Bay, where he will soon complete his thirty-ninth year of teaching. One of the most decorated professors on campus, he received the Outstanding Professor Award and was a four-time winner of the Pi Kappa Delta Best Lecturer Award. After graduating from Brooklyn College, Jerry earned his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in American history from The Graduate Center, City University of New York. He has written numerous articles on the political and military history of
the Civil War, and is the author of Henry Winter Davis: Antebellum and Civil
War Congressman from Maryland and co-author of Civil War Firsts: The
Legacies of America’s Bloodiest Conflict, which was a selection of the
nationally prestigious History Book Club and the Military Book Club. In
April 2007, the book was published in a paperback edition, with a new
format, a generous number of photos and illustrations, and a new title: A
Nation Transformed: How the Civil War Changed America Forever. In view of
his outstanding record, The Graduate Center of the City University of New
York honored Jerry with its Annual Alumni Achievement Award for 2008. |
