Danny Glover - Rae Dorough Speaker Series
Actor, producer, and humanitarian Danny Glover has been a commanding presence on screen, stage, and television for more than 30 years. As an actor, his film credits range from the blockbuster Lethal Weapon franchise to smaller independent features, some of which Glover also produced. He has starred in an array of motion pictures in recent years, including the critically-acclaimed Dreamgirls directed by Bill Condon and in the futuristic 2012 for director Roland Emmerich. In addition to his film work, Glover is highly sought after as a public speaker, delivering inspirational addresses and moving performances in such diverse venues as college campuses, union rallies, and business conventions.

Most recently Glover appeared in the Sony Pictures box office hit Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle co-starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Danny DeVito. He just completed filming the independent feature Press Play on location in Hawaii.

Glover has gained respect for his wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts, with a particular emphasis on advocacy for economic justice and access to health care and education programs in the United States and Africa. For these efforts, Glover received a 2006 DGA Honor and was honored with a 2011 “Pioneer Award” from the National Civil Rights Museum. Internationally Glover has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program from 1998-2004, focusing on issues of poverty, disease, and economic development in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Glover was presented in 2011 with the prestigious Medaille des Arts et des Letters from the French Ministry of Culture and was honored with a Tribute at the Deauville International Film Festival. In 2014 Glover received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of San Francisco. Currently, Glover serves as UNICEF Ambassador and Ambassador for the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent along with Harry Belafonte and Forrest Whittaker.

A native of San Francisco, Glover trained at the Black Actors’ Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre. His Broadway debut in Fugard’s Master Harold…and the Boys brought him to national recognition and led director Robert Benton to cast him in his first leading role in 1984’s Academy Award-nominated Best Picture, Places in the Heart. The following year Glover starred in two more Best Picture nominated films: Peter Weir’sWitness and Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple. In 1987 Glover partnered with Mel Gibson in the first Lethal Weapon film and went on the star in three hugely successful Lethal Weapon sequels. Glover starred in The Royal Tenenbaums and To Sleep With Anger which he executive produced and for which he won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor.

On the small screen, Glover won an Image Award, a Cable ACE Award, and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the title role of the HBO Movie Mandela. He has also received Emmy nominations for his work in the acclaimed miniseries Lonesome Dove, the telefilm Freedom Song, and as a director, he earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Showtime’s Just a Dream. Glover also appeared in the HBO Original Movie Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight.

The Wailin' Jennys
What started as a happy accident of three singer-songwriters united for a one time performance in a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, has evolved into one of the most beloved of international folk acts, the Wailin’ Jennys. Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse’s three distinct voices combine in achingly-perfect signature harmonies, creating some of the most exciting and exquisite music on the folk-roots scene. They have released five critically-acclaimed albums, including the Juno-winning release, “Bright Morning Stars.” Their beguiling mix of Americana, pop and traditional folk styles is delivered with the dynamic and irresistible vocal power of three.

Tape Face
As seen on America’s Got Talent, the utterly spectacular and endlessly inventive humor of TAPE FACE is impossible to imagine but completely understandable for any age. Every once in a while, something magical reminds us that we all have an inner child that must be fed. Through simple, clever and charming humor aimed at satisfying that hunger, TAPE FACE has emerged as one of the most enjoyable shows the world has ever seen. The creation of New Zealand comedian Sam Wills, TAPE FACE is mime with noise, stand-up with no talking, drama with no acting. It has to be seen to be believed!

So what is this show like exactly? Well, attempting to describe any aspect of it would be a disservice – the less you know the more you will enjoy it. TAPE FACE is a character with universal appeal. Delightful, wry, many-layered and hilarious, he transcends the barriers of language and culture. You’ll laugh, you’ll scream and ultimately end up like TAPE FACE – completely “lost for words.”

Cirque Mechanics: Birdhouse Factory
Enter the most unlikely setting for a circus … a factory … where the workers are acrobats and the machines are circus props. Welcome to Birdhouse Factory! Be amazed by a contortionist performing on a turntable powered by unicyclists. Be captivated by the trapeze artist powered by the spins of an acrobat inside a giant wheel. Be stunned as the trampoline wall artists defy the laws of physics. At once both breathtaking and enchanting, this Birdhouse Factory offers a tale of laughter, love, and impossible flight.

Birdhouse Factory was inspired, in part, by the masterful industry murals of Mexican- born artist Diego Rivera, the outrageous illustrations of cartoonist Rube Goldberg and the slap-stick humor of Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times. While these inspirations make Birdhouse Factory artful, nostalgic and funny, the true essence of the show comes from the circus.

Birdhouse Factory is a simple story of daily life in a “widgets” factory circa 1935 as workers are brought together by the most unlikely of events, a bird accidentally injured by the main steam boiler. The accident and caring for the bird, brings the workers closer together and inspires them to break away from the monotony of the assembly-line. They showcase their true inner talents and abilities by using their bodies and machines to build birdhouses in a more joyous and soulful way.

Branford Marsalis Quartet
Branford Marsalis has stayed the course. From his early acclaim as a saxophonist bringing new energy and new audiences to jazz, he has refined and expanded his talents and his horizons as a musician, composer, bandleader and educator – a 21st Century mainstay of artistic excellence.

Branford grew up in the rich musical environment of New Orleans, the son of the late famed pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis and the oldest of his three jazz-playing siblings. He formed his own quartet in 1986 and has taken guest turns with such giants of the jazz world as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins. Among his many credits, Branford has composed for Broadway, toured with Sting, served as musical director for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and appeared on numerous other television and radio programs. He is a frequent soloist in jazz performance and, increasingly, in the classical universe as well.

Known for the telepathic communication among its uncommonly consistent personnel, its deep book of original music replete with expressive melodies and provocative forms, and an unrivaled spirit in both live and recorded performances, the Branford Marsalis Quartet has long been recognized as the standard to which other ensembles of its kind must be measured. Their most recent album “The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul” was released in 2019 and earned two Grammy nominations.

The Daily Show Writers Comedy Tour
The longest-running program on Comedy Central, The Daily Show has won 24 Emmy Awards and remains more culturally relevant than ever. Host Trevor Noah’s brilliant wit pierces the cultural conversation, making it one of the most engaging and hysterically funny shows on late night. From failed dating lives and the complexity of cat ownership, to today’s jaw-dropping politics, join four of the funniest Daily Show writers, out from behind the scenes, as they share more of the jokes that make Americans laugh on the Daily.

Kat Radley was featured in 2018 in Glamour Magazine and The Hollywood Reporter as one of the top female writers in late night. She has performed standup on FOX’s Laughs, and her jokes can be heard on Sirius XM Radio, Pandora, Spotify, and her debut iTunes album, “The Important Thing Is That I’m Pretty.” Kat has opened for Maria Bamford and headlined SF Sketchfest and the Women in Comedy Festival in Boston.

Matt Koff won an Emmy for his work at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and his standup has appeared on Comedy Central and the History Channel. Matt’s debut comedy album, “Who’s My Little Guy,” was released on 800 Pound Gorilla Records during the summer of 2019.

Joe Opio, an Ugandan-native, is a trained lawyer and accountant in addition to being a comic writer for the Daily Show. An observational satirist, Joe’s standup has been seen on three different continents from South Africa through Switzerland, to the biggest comedy clubs in New York. He has written over 360 episodes of The Daily Show and is a WGA Award nominee.

Randall Otis is a writer, comedian and actor who has performed around the country, including the New York Comedy Festival, the New South Comedy Festival and more. He was featured on VICE, Above Average, AllDefDigital, and has written for The Huffington Post including “Scientists Discover Another Thing You’re Too Stupid To Understand” and “Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder and Other Reasons I Abandoned My Family!”
