John Hammond has spent forty years entertaining audiences worldwide with his intense solo-acoustic folk blues. He has been called a musical force of nature – with his relentless, no-holds-barred guitar playing, stomping his foot, alternately singing and wailing on the harmonica, he can often sound like an entire band all by himself. Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame last year, Hammond’s roots-driven touch on powerful interpretations of classic blues songs make them uniquely his own and render them unforgettable for listeners everywhere.

Amgen Tour of California Stage 7 Begins and passes through Livermore
This year Stage 7 Begins in Livermore, at Carnegie park on 3rd Street.
The tour will head north on Livermore Ave. to Morgan Territory Road, then east on Marsh Creek / Camino Diablo Road.
It will head south at the Byron Highway to Mountain House Road, then briefly on Grant Line Rd to N. Midway Road.
It then heads west on W. Patterson Pass Road / Co Rd 2063 to Cross Road, then to Tesla Road, by the wineries.
The course then goes to Livermore Ave, through downtown Livermore, then takes Manning/Highland Road to Tassajara Road to Blackhawk Road and then up Mt. Diablo.

The text from the Amgen Tour web page:

Stage 7, Presented by Nissan: Saturday, May 18 – Livermore to Summit of Mount Diablo
Start Location: 3rd St./Carnegie Park
Finish Location: Mount Diablo – summit parking lot
Start Time: 11:35 a.m.
Stage Length: 93 miles

In all likelihood, the 2013 Amgen Tour of California will be won or lost on the climb to the peak of Mount Diablo. The 92-mile route features several cyclist favorites, including Morgan Territory Road, new to the race this year. The riders will navigate narrow, twisting climbs through bucolic farm country and redwoods before making a roller-coaster descent. The race will return to Patterson Pass Road where they will encounter the infamous “wall,” a short, steep climb toward the end of the road where riders will peddle up grades over 15 percent in the last two kilometers. The peloton will return to Livermore for a sprint, and finally, expect large crowds at Mount Diablo, which historically has attracted some of the largest audiences for a mountain race route. This year, the race will cover an additional 4.5 miles of climbing to the summit, perhaps the greatest viewscape of any mountain in California with breathtaking views up to 200 miles in any direction.

Sponsor: Amgen
Location:  Downtown Livermore.  Start is at Carnegie Park.
Times:  Starts at 11:35am.
Admission: Free to watch.

Livermore-Amador Symphony  - Ode to a Joyous 50th Season
*
Beethoven: “Coriolan” Overture
* Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
     Nancy Wait, soprano
     Wendy Hillhouse, alto
     Brian Thorsett, tenor
     Leroy Kromm, baritone
Pacific Masterworks Chorus and Valley Concert Chorale

Completing the orchestra’s triumphal Golden Season is a symphonic and choral tour de force: an all-Beethoven program whose capstone is the Ninth, the apotheosis of Beethoven’s symphonies, if not all his music. Often called the “Symphony of Joy”, the moniker endures not just for the supremacy of the famous “Ode to Joy”, but for the sheer force of joy that infuses all the music from beginning to end. The ideas Beethoven would use in his monumental work were in formation for many years: melodies and parts that he would ultimately use in the Ninth date back to the gestative years before he wrote his First. Schiller’s poem “The Ode to Joy” interested Beethoven from 1793, when he sought to place it in song, but the musical theme of the last movement was written only a year before the completion of the symphony, showing that Beethoven composed the work over his entire life. Including a chorus with four soloists, the Ninth is the first symphony by a major composer to use the voice as an instrument. Written after Beethoven’s deafness was complete, it stands as a testament to the composer’s musical genius and is considered by many to be the greatest piece of music ever written.
