Lecture - When the Bay Area Was Hollywood
David Kiehn, historian for the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont, will speak on “When the Bay Area was Hollywood”
How active was filmmaking in the San Francisco Bay Area during the silent era? You might be surprised. David Kiehn will present a slide show and talk about the people and production companies making films in the Bay Area, including Niles, before Hollywood dominated the film industry.
Kiehn is the author of Broncho Billy and the Essanay Film Company, a book based on seven years of research investigating moviemaking in the west from 1908 to 1916 with this pioneering production company.
The author’s background as a movie camera technician working in the Bay Area for 20 years was invaluable in understanding the techniques and advances in production methods of that day.
